Project Privacy Statement

As Administrator for this project, the privacy and confidentiality of your personal data (and that of all project members) is of paramount importance. The protection of your privacy and personal data is a priority and one of my key responsibilities as Project Administrator.

What personal data about you do I hold or have access to?
The only personal data about you that I hold or have access to is data that you may have given me directly (by e-mail or by post) or data that has been made available to me by FamilyTreeDNA with your explicit consent.

You will have previously chosen the level of access for Administrators that you are personally comfortable with. You can change this level of access at any time by simply signing in to your FTDNA account, hover over your name (top right), click on Account Settings, then the Project Preferences tab, and then click the orange EDIT button beside the project in question to see or amend the current Administrator Access settings.

Your DNA test data is pseudonymized to protect your privacy, unless you have given consent for your name to be made public. In practice, this is not necessary and occurs only rarely (for example when a guest blogger discusses their own DNA results).

Pseudonymization (i.e. use of a pseudonym in place of your real name) can be achieved in three different ways:
  1. by use of your test kit number in lieu of your name
  2. by using your initials and the last 4 numbers of your test kit number in lieu of your name (this makes it easier for you to identify who you are, whilst maintaining your privacy and anonymity)
  3. by using your Most Distant Known Ancestor details in lieu of your name

All personal data held in my files is password protected. Your contact information (if I have it) is stored in a separate file from your DNA test data. You may request an updated version of your personal data at any time.

What use do I make of your personal data?
The only use I make of your personal data is that relevant to achieving the Goals of the Project as stated in our public website at https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/farrell-dna-project/about/goals. I will not publish your name, e-mail address or other contact details, or share this information with any other project member or other person (apart from your “Matches”) or organization without your specific consent unless I am legally obliged to do so. Nor will I share or publish your DNA test results except in pseudonymized form as described above.

I usually update the Project website every few weeks or months. I personally do not use cookies to collect personal data of visitors to this website but the host (Google Blogger) does. Here is what Google says about this:
"This site uses cookies from Google to deliver its services and analyze traffic. Your IP address and user-agent are shared with Google along with performance and security metrics to ensure quality of service, generate usage statistics, and to detect and address abuse."

For how long do I hold your personal data?
I hold your personal data for as long as you remain a member of the Project. If you wish to withdraw from the Project you should advise me and FTDNA. You may make such a request at any time, and I will remove your data from the project files as quickly as practicable. However I cannot retrieve data that has previously been posted in the public domain.

Compliance with current legislation, regulations, standards and guidance
In my administration of this Project I endeavour to comply with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation 2017 and also with the most recent editions of the following:

Responding to queries
I endeavour to respond promptly to any queries, errors, or concerns you may bring to my attention about my handling of your personal data associated with this Project. Some of your concerns may be better forwarded directly to FTDNA and in such cases I may forward such queries to them (with a copy to you).

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any queries or concerns. My email address is below.
